"A man is not sick because he has an illness,
he has an illness because he is sick"
-- Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine

Your primary healing resource for:
  • Therapeutic Massage

  • How does massage affect healing?

Massage therapy is an ancient technique involving manual soft tissue manipulation, including holding, creating movement, and/or applying pressure to the body. Therapeutic massage reduces the heart rate and blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion and increases serotonin and endorphins, enhancing medical treatment. Besides the well-known Swedish massage technique used primarily for relaxation, therapeutic massage practitioners administer:
  • Pressure point therapy (ranging from trigger point and myotherapy to shiatsu and acupressure)

What are the benefits of massage treatments?
Therapeutic massage offers a number of benefits, including:
  • Reducing stress
  • Increasing joint flexibility and range of motion
  • Relieving mental and physical fatigue
  • Preventing edema (swelling) that occurs with inactivity by stimulating venous and lymphatic flow
  • Increases sense of well being by releasing "endorphins" - the body's natural pain killers and mood enhancers - into the brain and nervous system.

How do I find a good massage therapist?
The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) recommends that consumers ask therapists specific questions about their training, such as:
  • Are you currently licensed as a massage therapist in this state?
  • Where did you receive training?
  • Did you graduate?
  • Was the program either accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation or a member of the AMTA Council of Schools?
  • Are you certified by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork?
  • Do you have any advanced training in specific massage techniques, especially Prenatal Massage?
  • Are you a member of the AMTA?
  • Have you treated others with my same symptoms?
